What types of sinks are available?

Kitchen sinks are usually mounted on a worktop, but they can also be placed on a piece of furniture or fixed to the wall. There are several types of sinks that are categorised according to their installation:

Built-in sinks
The recessed sink is installed in the worktop from above. An opening of exactly the size of the sink is sawn into the countertop and the visible edges of the sink are sealed to the worktop. Since the cut-out is made where you want it, this type of sink can be installed wherever it suits you. The trend goes obviously in the direction of flush mounting because it makes cleaning much easier. Manufacturers are doing their part: ultra-flat models are available with edges that practically blend into the worktop.

Flush-mounted sinks
In this variant, the sink and worktop blend perfectly. Installation is more complicated and must be carried out by a specialist, as a special machine is required to remove a layer of the countertop. The extra work and costs can pay off as the maintenance is easier.

Undercounter sinks
The sink is mounted directly under the worktop so that only the bowl is visible without rim. It is usually combined with natural stone or glass worktops, because the cut surfaces of these materials are waterproof. The advantage of this installation is that the crumbs can simply be wiped off and fall directly into the sink. Aesthetics is also their strong point: these sinks are very popular in modern kitchens where architecture and minimalism meet naturally. It is the ideal type of sink if you want to refurbish your kitchen.

For all types of installation, it is important to make sure that the sink has been sealed perfectly.

As the drain is often closed to fill the sink and do the dishes, it is advisable to have an overflow to avoid water damage.  This does not necessarily mean having a sink equipped with an overflow, i.e. a hole in the upper part of the bowl. It can also be integrated invisibly into the waste fitting, so that there are no unsightly, hard-to-clean openings in the sink.

SHAPES AND SIZES OF THE SINK

Unlike washbasins, sinks are usually square or rectangular in shape because it is simply more convenient for everyday use. However, there are also round or slightly oval sinks and all manufacturers provide solutions for corner installation. Sinks with 1, 1.5 (one large bowl and a smaller one) and 2 bowls are available. Of course, multitasking enthusiasts will prefer a two bowls model, but the decision is often made based on the space available.

The dimensions of your sink should be adapted to your habits. How much time do you spend in front of the sink in your kitchen? Do you also wash larger and more fragile objects there? How many people live in your household? The more often you wash large objects and the more people are present in your household, the larger should be the sink. However, again, the space available determines in the first place the size of the sink.

The depth of the sink should be of particular importance, especially if you are just renovating your kitchen. Think about the drawers, cupboards and appliances underneath to adjust the depth of the sink accordingly. Sinks are available in all sizes, so there is a sink for every kitchen. While some of them are only 40 cm wide, there are sinks that can be up to 90 cm.

THE RIGHT MATERIAL FOR YOUR SINK

Kitchen sinks are available in the following materials:

Stoneware or ceramic
The material is very easy to maintain and is resistant to stains, chemicals and thermal shock. The disadvantage is that this material can crack or even break upon impact with a heavy and sharp object. Ceramic sinks are available in a variety of colours and Villeroy & Boch has made it its speciality. Several types of coating are available to improve ceramic properties: to increase impact resistance, to improve hygiene, to make the water bead on surface.

Stainless steel
Probably the most widely used because, being light, it is easy to install, resistant to corrosion and thermal shock, antibacterial and can absorb shocks, thanks to its flexibility. However, it will get scratched over time and must be maintained regularly to wipe away limescale deposits and fingerprints. Its beautiful shiny appearance makes it an all-rounder, no matter what the style of your kitchen is.

Composite materials
They are becoming increasingly popular for good reasons: these materials can be used to create the most diverse shapes and this, in a variety of colours. Very easy to maintain and robust, resistant to scratches and thermal shock, it is a very serious competitor as a sink material. Their light weight and resistance to chemicals are also attractive.

Granite
Due to its smooth surface, granite is particularly hygienic and therefore, well suited for sinks. The material does not discolour and is food-safe and dirt-resistant. However, you must be careful with fragile objects. As this material is very hard and non-resilient, they can easily break upon contact with the sink. Granite sinks can be coloured in different ways to fit in every kitchen.

USEFUL ACCESSORIES

Nowadays, custom-made accessories are sold with kitchen sinks to make everyday life easier. The trend here is towards the multi-functional sink: cutting boards, waste trays, insert strainers, baskets, detergent dispensers and even an integrated waste bin, which you can access directly through an opening in the sink.

Some sinks are equipped with a drip tray on which wet dishes can be placed to dry or a smaller basin with a grid for fruit or vegetable for example. You can then simply remove the grate and pour the contents into the waste bin.
